The best fabric for flags: how to choose it
A flag, regardless of its flag, is never just the sum of the shapes and colors that compose it. Whether it is a sporting flag to show off with pride during an event, a signaling flag used as a means of communication, or whether it is a national or international flag, each flag always has a strong symbolic value and, very often, incorporates extremely important values and meanings.
It is not a simple portion of printed or sewn fabric, but often a symbol of history, culture and belonging. For this reason, the creation and design of a flag requires extreme care and attention to every detail, and an accurate evaluation of the use that is asked of it.
Among the many activities to be treated with meticulousness in the artisan creation of a state-of-the-art flag, great importance is reserved for the choice of the best fabric for flags to use.
The material with which a flag is created strongly affects the quality of the flag itself, the strength and the final appearance of the latter, so it is evident that one fabric is not worth the other. On the contrary, the choice of the best fabric for a flag is extremely important and depends on different evaluations at the design and creation stage of the flag.
There are more common fabrics and frequently used for the production of flags, almost to be set as a standard now, but there are also fabrics that guarantee greater resistance or better adaptation to the conditions in which the flag will be exposed. Or again, there are more precious and expensive fabrics, mainly used for the realization of flags of high value, exposed in formal and very important places and situations.
So what is the best fabric for flags? To choose the right one that suits your needs, it is important to know the different materials and the characteristics of the latter.
Fabrics used for flags
Before listing and describing the different fabrics that can be used for the creation of a flag, it is important to make a clarification on another important aspect that affects the final realization of the flag: the quality and method of printing.
The way in which the flag is printed is in fact extremely important, as is the choice of the fabric used, to ensure that the final result is optimal.
In this sense, a printing method that allows to create high quality flags (also used by us at Adria Bandiere) is undoubtedly the printing on fabric in through colors. This technology allows you to make precise prints, without smudges or color loss and, indeed, allows you to make flags with intense and shiny colors.
This printing mode also takes advantage of the advantages of through colors that guarantee a yield of 99.99% even on the back of the fabric, thus avoiding visual differences between the two sides of the flag.
It is in fact important, very important, that the flag has two faces, two sides, a straight and a specular reverse, with the same image or design, but mirrored, with the same intensity of color. The print color must completely pass through the fabric.
Surely the traditional printing, the screen printing made at the table, with manual paintings made by engraving, is the oldest. This screen print still made by hand, gives our flags, even today, a flavor of other times and a very important added value. On the contrary, the most modern and innovative types of printing of the latest generation from sublimation transfer to direct have as their countervalue the speed of execution and cost containment, without however decreasing or losing on the side of print quality.
Moving on to “explore” the possible fabrics for flags, among the most used we find cheappolyester, nautical polyester and polyester stamina,to which are also added more preciousfabrics such as pure silk, viscose moella, polyester twill or heavy satin.
Cheap polyester, as the name can already guess, is particularly suitable for solutions that do not require a large economic investment and for flags that can be used for short periods. It is a fabric that still guarantees a valid quality of the flag, but which is less suitable and resistant outdoors to the weather, for flags that must be exposed, especially outdoors, for long periods of time. We prefer to propose this material, cheap polyester, for large street demonstrations and for individual events.
In fact, for its characteristics and its cheapness, it is the best fabric for sports flags, used in a stadium or during an event, but not only.
Moving on to the technical characteristics of this fabric, cheap polyester has a weight ranging from 60 to 90 gr per square meter and the flags that Adria Bandiere produces with this fabric are usually made with a single perimeter hem to a needle and side loop to insert the rod or using a pair of laces.
Nautical polyester, on the other hand, looks like a more “technical” fabric than cheap polyester and with a higher quality. It is therefore a less economical material, but which is often chosen for outdoor flags that must be resistant and of adequate quality to withstand different weather conditions, without losing color for a medium-long period, such as a temporal promotion or an inauguration. Or in the case of seasonal activity, if you want to replace the flags at each opening. The nautical polyester, used for the realization of the flags, at our latitude, and with our temperatures and the wind of our Coasts of the Mediterranean, tends to cook, and then to crumble pulverizing. It remains very water-repellent, and therefore does not weigh down with rain and frost, for this reason it is much more suitable for the colder climates of northern Europe.
Compared to cheap polyester, nautical polyester has a weight of 110 gr per square meter and the flags we make with this type of fabric can be packaged in different ways depending on the size and uses of the flag itself.
Finally, polyester stamina, the best fabric for flags, which undoubtedly represents the top of the range. This particular high quality fabric is extremely resistant and is therefore the perfect solution to make flags with excellent tear resistance, ideal for being exposed with complete tranquility even outside, without fear that atmospheric agents can ruin them even after a long time.
Polyester stamina has a weight of 145/155 gr per square meter and is composed of a canvas weave, where the interweaving between the weft and the warp are very evident, with high tenacity. It is precisely this characteristic that guarantees great resistance to the flags made with this fabric, because it guarantees the fabric to be crossed by the wind without suffering violence. In addition, our yarn has been studied on the traditional recipes of the military specifications, specific for the realization of the flags, when these were still made of wool, and then reproduced by these with all the tricks that new technologies can provide us today. The polyester stamina that we use for the realization of our flags of nations and customized is just built ad hoc for us in Italy, with a specific recipe. As mentioned above, there are also other types of fabrics, for the construction of flags. These are more valuable fabrics such as pure silk, viscola moella, polyester twill or heavy satin. These fabrics, precisely because of their value and high quality and finish, are not used for the realization of outdoor flags, but their use is instead limited to prestigious indoor flags, placed in formal and prominent places, where the care of every single detail is even more important, such as the right shade of color.
